Parents Exploring Braces

The most common question we hear from parents: when should we start? Here's what you need to know before your child's first appointment.

Deciding when — and whether — to pursue orthodontic treatment for your child is one of the more involved healthcare decisions parents face. At Smile Suite in Evanston, we want you to leave every appointment with clarity, not confusion. That starts with plain answers to the questions parents ask most — no pressure, no upsell.

When to get a first evaluation

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic screening by age 7. At this age, enough permanent teeth are present to assess how the bite is developing and whether any early intervention makes sense.

You don't need a referral from your child's dentist — you can contact us directly. If your child is older and hasn't been seen yet, that's completely normal. We work with patients at all stages.

Signs it may be worth scheduling sooner

Your child loses baby teeth very early or very late
Teeth look noticeably crowded or gapped
Your child has difficulty biting or chewing
Your child breathes through their mouth
Upper and lower front teeth don't meet when biting
Jaw appears shifted to one side

Understanding treatment timing

Not all treatment starts at the same age. Understanding the difference between Phase 1 and comprehensive treatment helps you plan — financially and logistically.

Phase 1

Early (Interceptive) Treatment

Typically ages 7–10. Limited treatment that addresses a specific developing issue — a crossbite, severe crowding, or jaw growth concern. Not all children need this phase. Those who do usually still need comprehensive treatment later.

Duration: 9–18 months

Phase 2

Comprehensive Treatment

Typically ages 11–15, once most permanent teeth are in. This is the main treatment phase — full braces or clear aligners to align all teeth and correct the bite. Most patients go through this phase with or without a Phase 1.

Duration: 18–28 months

The financial picture

Orthodontic treatment is a significant investment, and we want you to have a full picture before you commit to anything. At your consultation, we'll provide a detailed treatment proposal including cost, insurance compatibility, and payment options.

Insurance

Many dental insurance plans include an orthodontic benefit. We'll help you understand what your plan covers and how to apply it toward treatment.

Payment Plans

We offer flexible monthly payment arrangements with no interest. Most families spread the cost over the length of treatment so there's no large upfront payment.

FSA / HSA

Orthodontic treatment is an eligible expense for flexible and health savings accounts. We can provide documentation to support your claim.

You don't have to decide at the consultation

Your child's first appointment is purely informational. We'll assess their teeth and jaw development, explain what we see, and give you a written summary of any recommendations. There's no pressure to begin treatment at that visit — or ever.

Supporting your child through treatment

Treatment outcomes are better when parents are engaged. Here's what makes the biggest difference:

Establish hygiene habits early

Braces require more thorough brushing and flossing. We'll review exactly what to do at the first appointment, but building the habit at home makes a real difference.

Attend check-up appointments

Adjustment visits happen every 6–10 weeks. Keeping these appointments on schedule is important — delays extend treatment time.

Take emergencies in stride

A popped bracket or loose wire is not an emergency. Call us during business hours and we'll advise you on what to do until we can see them.

Remind, don't nag

For teens with clear aligners, gentle reminders to wear their aligners go further than constant reminders. We'll talk about compliance at the start of treatment.

Bring your questions

There's no such thing as too many questions at a first consultation. We'll walk through your child's situation, explain our findings, and make sure you leave with a clear picture — no obligation to proceed.
