Your Summer Ortho Travel Kit: Don't Leave Home Without These

You’ve got your plane tickets, your playlists, your swimsuit… but have you packed for your smile?

Whether you’re headed to the beach, visiting family out of town, or just taking a weekend road trip, staying on track with your orthodontic care still matters — even on vacation. Here’s our must-have Ortho Travel Kit checklist so your smile stays in vacation mode too.

First: The Essentials

Every braces or aligner wearer should have these on hand, whether you’re gone for two days or two weeks:

  • Travel toothbrush — foldable or compact to fit in your bag
  • Toothpaste — fluoride preferred, travel-size for carry-ons
  • Floss picks or threaders — flossing can’t take a vacation
  • Travel-size mouthwash — alcohol-free is gentler on sensitive mouths
  • Orthodontic wax — in case anything starts rubbing mid-trip
  • Compact mirror — for quick checks after meals

Keep everything in one pouch or waterproof bag so it’s easy to grab — especially at the beach, a waterpark, or in transit.

For Braces Wearers

  • Interdental or proxy brushes — great for cleaning around brackets on the go
  • Pain reliever (Tylenol or Advil) — just in case of soreness
  • Ortho-safe snacks — soft granola bars, applesauce pouches, protein shakes
  • A list of emergency ortho contacts — in case something pops loose

And pack a little extra patience — vacation meals aren’t always braces-perfect, but small adjustments go a long way.

For Invisalign or Clear Aligner Wearers

  • Your aligner case — never wrap trays in a napkin, they will get thrown away
  • An extra aligner set, if you’re due for a switch, or your previous set as a backup
  • Cleaning crystals or foaming cleanser — keep trays fresh, especially if you’re eating out
  • A tiny, soft-bristle toothbrush just for your trays

Bring a small collapsible cup for rinsing if a sink won’t be nearby.

Snack Smart While Traveling

For braces: soft cheese cubes, mashed potatoes or mac and cheese, yogurt or smoothie packs, muffins without nuts or hard toppings, and cooked pasta with sauce.

For aligners (after you take them out): all of the above, plus chips or popcorn — just clean up well afterward — and yes, ice cream, cotton candy, and sweet treats, followed by a rinse and brush.

Smile-Safe Travel Tips

  • Flying? Cabin pressure changes can cause slight discomfort in braces — keep wax or pain relief handy.
  • Swimming? Don’t wear aligners in the pool or hot tub — store them safely in their case.
  • Hot weather? Keep aligners and wax out of direct sun or heat, since they can warp.
  • Road tripping? Stop to brush and floss after snacks, especially if you’re not wearing your aligners during the drive.

If Something Breaks

If a bracket pops off, a wire pokes out, or you lose an aligner: don’t panic. Call or text us and we’ll advise on next steps. If needed, find a local orthodontist for a temporary fix and let us know as soon as you can. If you lose a tray, wear your last completed set until you’re back.
